Netflix Pix - The Taking of Deborah Logan

By Wayne Brekke

Greetings readers!
Around this time of year, Netflix always showcases a few more horror movies to get you in the mood. This week I noticed a film that I hadn't heard of, yet had a higher star rating than I’m used to seeing for indie horror films. Turns out, this found footage film was produced by Bryan Singer and it has a couple of notable stars you may find familiar.

Yes, this is a found footage film, but I personally don’t have a problem with them as long as the context of the “found footage” is at least somewhat believable. Of course, it’s horror so your belief should be suspended a bit. That said, I always wait for when a particular horror film will pull me out. The “buy out” is what I like to call it.

The Taking of Deborah Logan is a horror film surrounding the events that occur during a documentary about Alzheimer’s disease. The main character is going through the painful process as the small film crew follows her in her various states of coherency. Things turn creepy quickly as evil forces start taking advantage of the situation and the crew and Deborah’s daughter (actress Anne Ramsay) are along for the ride.

The story is fairly solid and I found that I wasn’t bought out as quickly as I thought I would be. Veteran soap and film actress Jill Larson (As the World Turns, All My Children, One Life To Live, Young and the Restless), does a fantastic job of creating a character that you feel sad for at one moment and are terrified by the next. Anne Ramsay plays her daughter and though she was familiar to me from “A League of Their Own” and “Mad About You,” she played her role well enough for her fame not to be distracting from the supposed reality feel of the found footage.

There were some fantastically creepy parts with Deborah ripping off her skin, showing up in creepy dark places unexpectedly, ranting in other languages in a demonic voice, and generally acting possessed. There were also parts of the film that seemed to have incredibly high creep potential, but for me were underutilized.

High points were:
  • Larson’s great performance
  •  The decision of one camera operator on the documentary crew to do something not many do in horror films
  • Shots of a possessed Deborah ingesting  things she shouldn’t (see link below...)
  • A creepy hypnotized child she takes with her for a little “walk.”

Low points were:
  • Some of the actions and acting of the documentary crew
  • A slightly convoluted storyline
  • Underutilized creepy shots and potential scares
  • An ending that was a little too long

All in all, this movie was solid and for those that don’t mind found footage and/or possession films, you should enjoy this one. It’s streaming on Netflix now.

Reviews: American Horror Story and The Walking Dead

A brief review of the premiers

By Lady Lillith

The month of October has brought us back some greatly anticipated shows everyone has been head-over heels for; American Horror Story: Freak Show and The Walking Dead. Seeing the premiers of each show has made my heart leap and tumble all over.

First up: AHS: Freak Show
The premier of AHS: Freak Show brought in unbelievable ratings of 10 million viewers! And with those views, the network FX has, not surprisingly, announced that they are picking up season five for another 13-episode run. Huzzah!

Now Freak Show has only brought us one episode so far but many, myself included, can clearly see that this season looks like it is going to bring us more horror than ever before. For starters, the opening credits roll through a circus theme, showing antique dolls and creepy clowns lurking about. Off that alone I started to get the heebie jeebies.

Throughout this first episode we were introduced to new characters and familiar faces, along with faces we didn't recognize. I greatly enjoyed seeing that Ryan Murphy brought in people with unique abilities and features that are the real deal outside of the acting world. I absolutely love seeing the world’s smallest woman, Jyoti Amge, having a role in this series.

From a psychotic clown who likes kidnapping, to a family of freaks who just want to be "normal," and plenty of grisly murders, it looks like this season is going to bring us things from our nightmares. And by nightmares, I mean a circus…a creepy, creepy circus. Stayed tuned every Wednesday night at 10 PST for more episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show

                                                                                         The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is back and everyone is rejoicing!
Shattering cable records of 17.3 million views (holy cow!), The Walking Dead is back and already kicking ass. The series premier starts us off with some nail biting scenes and a thought of OMG ARE THEY REALLY GOING TO KILL OFF A MAIN CHARACTER ALREADY?! (They don’t.  Hush now...it’s ok...they just like to torment us).

This episode picks up right where they left off in season 4 and it jumps right into the action. We find out more about what happened at Terminus before it all went to hell and we see our favorite bunch do what they do best, survive. There were some touching moments within all the killing and one of those moments I started to tear up. Damn you Walking Dead and making me feel all the feels! I don’t want to spoil too much of the premier but let me just say that this happy moment has to do with Daryll and if Daryll starts to cry…I cry. For those you have tuned into this episode, it’s ok now, I won’t tell if you won’t tell. *wipes away tears*

This season of TWD shows that we are going to have another fun ride ahead of us. More walkers, more human assholes, and a quest to just stay alive. Now if you stayed till after the credits, there was a secret scene where a certain someone shows his face once again and oh man, I can NOT wait to see how this is going to turn out! Stayed tuned every Sunday night at 6 PST for more episodes of The Walking Dead.

Bye bloody bye!

Necronomicast on Assignment! The Creepy Cool Factor of Disneyland

Greetings, Subcreatures!
I, like many of you, love to take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and travel.  Now that I am a father of three children under the age of 9, I felt an obligation to take my children on an “All American Family Vacation” this summer.  So naturally, my wife and I decided to take our children to a place where they could witness a re-enacted suicide by hanging, skeletons impaled on the end of a pirate’s saber, a duel at twenty paces that results in a man shot to death, a Victorian mansion teeming with enough paranormal activity to make James Wan wet the bed, assorted cemeteries, and dozens of assorted skulls, bones, and body parts strewn about.  Before you contemplate calling the local bureau of Child Protective Services, let me clarify…we took our kids to Disneyland.

Yes, Disneyland.  The “Happiest Place on Earth”.  The jewel of Southern California.  I’m a tremendous fan of Walt Disney and his vision of entertainment.  He conceived a place built on imagination, fantasy, and dreams.  Sometimes your imagination, fantasy, and dreams can take you to a darker place.  What’s great about what Walt Disney believed is that a darker place can be inspiring and fun.  To my 5 year old son, getting into a slow-moving boat for a ride in the dark to visit the world of pirates in the Caribbean flew in the face of the lessons we have been teaching him about being safe and staying out of trouble.  To my 8 year old daughter, actually standing in line to go inside a truly Haunted Mansion, was a little too much to comprehend.  Then, after a quick lunch in Tomorrowland, we made them wait their turn to battle the real Darth Vader in the Jedi Training Academy.  Quite a day.

It reminded me of why I love a good horror movie.  I dig the nervous anticipation I get before the theater darkens.  I like the way my pulse will quicken at a well written musical score.  I love the visceral reaction I can get at well designed and executed special effects.   When it is all over, I appreciate my relief that it was all just a movie and my life is my own again as I walk to my car.
There is a sign posted over the main entrance of Disneyland.  It reads “Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.”  It is the happiest place on Earth, but you never know what might be lurking around the corner!

Sleep tight,

Brian
