Video Game Spotlight - Terror Time Review: Outlast Game play video is here!

Hello all,

Lady Llilith here. I finally got around to filming a video of an amazing horror game called Outlast. Here you will see me screaming and cursing like a sailor because holy shit this game is ridiculous. And by ridiculous I mean ridiculously good.  Outlast is rated M for mature and with good reason. Blood, guts, language, and intense graphic scenes. If you don’t like that kind of thing, well why are you on this site? This is horror people! No but seriously, this game starts off with some graphic scenes but later on it gets really bad so if you are squeamish at all, maybe just stick to reading our reviews.

Overall I had a great time playing this game and I now know what all the hype was surrounding it. I can’t wait to keep playing more!

RATING: 10/10 - would play again and again and again.

I hope you enjoy my very first gaming video and please leave some feedback on what other games or topics you would like me to review for future videos!

Terrifyingly yours,
Lady Llilith

Behind The Evil Dead Videos

These videos have been out for a couple years, but as it's one of my favorite horror films (being a fan of the original franchise), and Jane Levy is adorable. This is a great series of behind the scenes for those that love the film. I'm sure much different that what the original film makers went through.

Mr. Jones (2013) Movie Review

By Trey Abel

Mr. Jones (2013)
Director: Karl Mueller
Netflix rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

“A young couple moves to the woods and soon finds their nightmares and reality colliding.”

This suspenseful horror film starts out shot in the "found footage" style and follows married couple Penny and Scott as they drive through a rural desert area to a secluded cabin to work on Scott's new idea for a nature documentary.

Soon after arriving, the film moves to a "montage" scene where we find out through a series of flashbacks that their relationship was rocky. To make matters worse, Scott has stopped taking his medication and soon stops shooting the documentary entirely.

While shooting one afternoon, Scott happens to find a cabin that belongs to mysterious artist "Mr. Jones" who is renown in the art world for sending out scarecrow "totems" across the country. These totems have no reason or description and have captivated the art world apparently. Penny immediately sees this as a way to salvage the documentary and things start to get weird.

The Cinematography catches a good blend of differing first person shots so you don't get the standard "this is what the actor is seeing" the whole movie. Penny and Scott were both well cast and as the movie progresses they do a great job of building the tension as the movie moves towards a reality bending conclusion. I’m not usually a big fan of the first person found footage style but I felt like director Karl Mueller (in his feature debut) did a great job of using it to create some artistic shots and keep a fresh take on a familiar genre.

The ending is definitely not going to be for everybody. Mainly due to the fact that it gets pretty trippy and incoherent at places, but I felt that the end, did a pretty good job of explaining itself through the confusion. Mood wise this movie was tense, frightening, and paced very well with a run-time of 84 minutes.

Nothing seemed to be slacking or dragged out with the exception of a few parts towards the end. If you are looking for an excellent quick suspenseful horror movie on Netflix this one comes with a very high recommendation from me. Karl Mueller definitely put out and admirable first effort and I'll be looking forward to seeing what he can do in the future.

The Bongcheong Dong Ghost Interactive Web Comic

By Lady Lillith

Over the years I have found some great and interesting comics on the web but nothing like this interactive story. Created in 2011, a Korean horror comic was posted online and it spread like wildfire. It scared me so much I still have a hard time looking at it without feeling my heart beat just a little bit faster.  I’ve seen postings of it recently and it has made me go back and enjoy this treasure all over again. This wonderful comic is called the “Bongcheong Dong Ghost”. It was written and illustrated by a Korean web cartoonist Ho-Rang and was submitted to the Naver Webtoon’s 2011 mystery short contest.

Since its publication, the urban legend comic has become infamous on the web, mostly for its inclusion of partially animated sequences and audio segments using javascript triggers. It is impossible to not activate these triggers and even though I know they’re there…they get me EVERY TIME.

The story of this comic follows a Korean schoolgirl who is coming home from an after-school study hall at 11:20 pm. As she approaches her apartment complex, she meets a ghost of a woman asking for her baby. She tries to trick the ghost and run away, but it only enrages the ghost.

Overall Bongcheong Dong Ghost is a creative interactive story that has had many people of all ages cowering and screaming with just a scrolling of its screen. Many have posted reaction videos which are fun to watch. (i.e. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vI0Wmxc2cY )

Check out the comic here: http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=350217&no=31  (be sure to translate the page to English and keep your volume up!)

Update: There is a second comic!
Upon writing this blog, I have come to find that the creating of the Bongcheong Dong Ghost has made a second interactive comic called the “Ok-su Station Ghost”.

Not as good as the first comic, the Ok-station ghost lacks the suspense and intensity of the Bongcheong Dong Ghost. The story shows a young man at a train station waiting for the next train when he sees a young woman walking back and forth moaning. He thinks this is odd and decides to talk about it online with other users saying she must be drunk. They want him to take a photo and when he is about to, she isn’t there.

With only one jump scare (that really isn’t scary at all), the Ok-su Station Ghost just didn’t hold the same horror presence as the previous comic had. With that being said, I do hope the creator of these comics comes out with another one that is as enticing as the first. He does a great job in animation and activating javascript triggers, he just needs to keep up with the horror elements.

Have a look here for the Ok-su Station Ghost comic: http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=350217&no=30&weekday=tue (as always, keep your volume up and be sure to translate to English)

Netflix Pix - The Taking of Deborah Logan

By Wayne Brekke

Greetings readers!
Around this time of year, Netflix always showcases a few more horror movies to get you in the mood. This week I noticed a film that I hadn't heard of, yet had a higher star rating than I’m used to seeing for indie horror films. Turns out, this found footage film was produced by Bryan Singer and it has a couple of notable stars you may find familiar.

Yes, this is a found footage film, but I personally don’t have a problem with them as long as the context of the “found footage” is at least somewhat believable. Of course, it’s horror so your belief should be suspended a bit. That said, I always wait for when a particular horror film will pull me out. The “buy out” is what I like to call it.

The Taking of Deborah Logan is a horror film surrounding the events that occur during a documentary about Alzheimer’s disease. The main character is going through the painful process as the small film crew follows her in her various states of coherency. Things turn creepy quickly as evil forces start taking advantage of the situation and the crew and Deborah’s daughter (actress Anne Ramsay) are along for the ride.

The story is fairly solid and I found that I wasn’t bought out as quickly as I thought I would be. Veteran soap and film actress Jill Larson (As the World Turns, All My Children, One Life To Live, Young and the Restless), does a fantastic job of creating a character that you feel sad for at one moment and are terrified by the next. Anne Ramsay plays her daughter and though she was familiar to me from “A League of Their Own” and “Mad About You,” she played her role well enough for her fame not to be distracting from the supposed reality feel of the found footage.

There were some fantastically creepy parts with Deborah ripping off her skin, showing up in creepy dark places unexpectedly, ranting in other languages in a demonic voice, and generally acting possessed. There were also parts of the film that seemed to have incredibly high creep potential, but for me were underutilized.

High points were:
  • Larson’s great performance
  •  The decision of one camera operator on the documentary crew to do something not many do in horror films
  • Shots of a possessed Deborah ingesting  things she shouldn’t (see link below...)
  • A creepy hypnotized child she takes with her for a little “walk.”

Low points were:
  • Some of the actions and acting of the documentary crew
  • A slightly convoluted storyline
  • Underutilized creepy shots and potential scares
  • An ending that was a little too long

All in all, this movie was solid and for those that don’t mind found footage and/or possession films, you should enjoy this one. It’s streaming on Netflix now.

The Taking of Deborah Logan on: IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes

Rating: 3 out of 5 Bloody Skulls.

Reviews: American Horror Story and The Walking Dead

A brief review of the premiers

By Lady Lillith

The month of October has brought us back some greatly anticipated shows everyone has been head-over heels for; American Horror Story: Freak Show and The Walking Dead. Seeing the premiers of each show has made my heart leap and tumble all over.

First up: AHS: Freak Show
The premier of AHS: Freak Show brought in unbelievable ratings of 10 million viewers! And with those views, the network FX has, not surprisingly, announced that they are picking up season five for another 13-episode run. Huzzah!

Now Freak Show has only brought us one episode so far but many, myself included, can clearly see that this season looks like it is going to bring us more horror than ever before. For starters, the opening credits roll through a circus theme, showing antique dolls and creepy clowns lurking about. Off that alone I started to get the heebie jeebies.

Throughout this first episode we were introduced to new characters and familiar faces, along with faces we didn't recognize. I greatly enjoyed seeing that Ryan Murphy brought in people with unique abilities and features that are the real deal outside of the acting world. I absolutely love seeing the world’s smallest woman, Jyoti Amge, having a role in this series.

From a psychotic clown who likes kidnapping, to a family of freaks who just want to be "normal," and plenty of grisly murders, it looks like this season is going to bring us things from our nightmares. And by nightmares, I mean a circus…a creepy, creepy circus. Stayed tuned every Wednesday night at 10 PST for more episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show

                                                                                         The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is back and everyone is rejoicing!
Shattering cable records of 17.3 million views (holy cow!), The Walking Dead is back and already kicking ass. The series premier starts us off with some nail biting scenes and a thought of OMG ARE THEY REALLY GOING TO KILL OFF A MAIN CHARACTER ALREADY?! (They don’t.  Hush now...it’s ok...they just like to torment us).

This episode picks up right where they left off in season 4 and it jumps right into the action. We find out more about what happened at Terminus before it all went to hell and we see our favorite bunch do what they do best, survive. There were some touching moments within all the killing and one of those moments I started to tear up. Damn you Walking Dead and making me feel all the feels! I don’t want to spoil too much of the premier but let me just say that this happy moment has to do with Daryll and if Daryll starts to cry…I cry. For those you have tuned into this episode, it’s ok now, I won’t tell if you won’t tell. *wipes away tears*

This season of TWD shows that we are going to have another fun ride ahead of us. More walkers, more human assholes, and a quest to just stay alive. Now if you stayed till after the credits, there was a secret scene where a certain someone shows his face once again and oh man, I can NOT wait to see how this is going to turn out! Stayed tuned every Sunday night at 6 PST for more episodes of The Walking Dead.

Bye bloody bye!
